Our Principles
Ā Mātou Mātāpono

  1. Te Tiriti

Adhering to Te Tiriti, including through pātuitanga (partnership), whakamarumarutia (active protection), kōwhiringa (options), tino rangatiratanga (self-determination) and by focusing strongly on equity for Māori/mana taurite, which is grounded in a kaupapa Māori approach to wellbeing.

  2. Collaboration and partnership

Promoting and facilitating effective collaboration and sustained and reciprocal partnerships, including with whānau and community, to identify and set priorities and to lay the foundations for more effective research and greater impact.

  3. Equity focus

Working to see that the benefits of brain health research are shared equitably and positively impact New Zealanders throughout their lives.

  4. Future focus

Long-term whakaaro, building strength through diversity in our leadership and workforce, including a strong base for early career researchers to achieve their career goals.

  5. Valuing diversity

Valuing and respecting diversity, including approaches to research, from fundamental and clinical to population-based and community-based research.

  6. Valuing Pasifika

Valuing and respecting the many Pasifika cultures and engagement with Pacific communities to reduce brain health inequities.

  7. Open Science

Promoting research which demonstrates a commitment to Open Science, is reproducible, and considers the importance of data sovereignty.

  8. Acknowledging the past

Building on and extending connections in brain health offered by the Brain Research New Zealand legacy.
